I remember driving down Kama’ili Rd. through Opihikao on the Big Island last year at this time viewing the dead soldier remnants of a papaya farm. Apparently, the beautiful jungles of Hawaii are no exception to the greed that has raped and pillaged most of the soil of this precious earth. Money hungry, genetically modified lovin’, so called “farmers” will buy a chunk of land, plant a bunch of gmo papaya seeds, destroy the earth and fruit with chemicals, reap the fruit which only takes a year or two to fruit but only produces for a few seasons, then leave the scorched earth to sit and be agriculturally unusable for, well, forever. Not a very permaculture friendly process now is it? If that isn’t enough, I later found out that even the “organic” papaya’s grown by earth lovin’ permaculturists on the island, is poisoned by the cross pollination of these gmo crops. Great… so one of my favorite fruits is losing it’s nutritional value because of these bulldozing dirt bullies.

Genetic engineering is a threat to food security, especially in a changing climate. The introduction of genetically manipulated organisms by choice or by accident grossly undermines sustainable agriculture and in so doing, severely limits the choice of food we can eat.

Once GE plants are released into the environment, they are out of control. If anything goes wrong – they are impossible to recall.

GE contamination threatens biodiversity respected as the global heritage of humankind, and one of our world’s fundamental keys to survival.
